The "Fundação Pinacoteca Benedicto Calixto" is a Commercial Law Culture Promoter Institution. It is a non-profitable, political or religious institution created in 1986 to promote art, mainly fine art; to get works of native or foreign artists, especially Benedicto Calixto, through donation, loan or acquisition and exhibit them conveniently.

In order to develop its purposes it benefits from the Incentive to Culture Law from the Culture Ministry, through which it undertook the research and cataloguing of all Calixto work seeking the creation of "Benedicto Calixto Documental Center". Through another project, the Pinacoteca acquired works to enlarge its collection permanently exhibited.
Besides showing its collection, it promotes exhibitions of famous artists, courses, musical shows as well as an art library.

Excluding the courses, all the foundation activities are free, including the entrance to its headquarters, a big house from the beginning of the century, restored and preserved as one of the last examples of the "coffee barons" residences.
